Introduction

The SHELL model is an abstract model that denotes the relationship between human factors and the aviation environment. The concept of the SHELL model was derived from the SHEL model by Edwards whose components include Software, Hardware, Environment, and Liveware. As such, the conceptual framework of the SHELL model was developed in 1975 after the introduction of an additional Liveware into the novel concept (Rodrigues, Cusick & Cusick, 2012). Primarily, the SHELL model underscores the interfaces between an individual (core Liveware) and the other components based on the varying interactions the person, has with the four components. The core aspect of this model is that any mismatch with the central Liveware and the other four components results in a human error which affects aviation safety (Wiegmann & Shappell, 2017).
