In today world Psychologists have a responsibility of keeping their patient’s/clients information confidential. The APA was put in place to help professionals not o ly ensure individuals of their safety, but to keep patients’/clients personal information confidential. Dr. Brewer crossed the line when he hired a private investigator to get information on Bob’s family. Bob had the legal right to not speak on what made him feel uncomfortable. The fact that Dr. Brewer did hire a private investigator is a cause for concern. (Brewer & Simpelo, 2014). The APA states in code: 4.01 when maintaining confidentiality gives psychologists the responsibility to take precautions to keep confidential information safe and protected. (American Psychological Association, 2010). Realizing the extent of confidentiality may only be regulated by law or relationship. (American Psychological Association, 2010). The APA code: 4.04 states minimizing intrusion on privacy (b). Psychologists only speak private information obtained within work for the right scientific and professional reasons and to whom it concerns. (American Psychological Association, 2010).
History
Bob is a 36yr old man who grew up as an only child in Canada. Bob came from a low-income, conservative, and strongly religious household. Bob stated that his father wasn’t in his life when growing up, because he worked most of the time. (Brewer & Simpelo, 2014). Bobs explained that his father was a nice easy going guy who worked very hard. Bob explained his mother to be a very strict, firm, a quick-tempered person who was prone to outburst over simple things. Bob stated that his father had recently died and his mother is still living. (Brewer & Simpelo, 2014). Bob later attended college and received a degree then began to work for his county as a psychiatric technician Bob worked at the company for 14 years. Bob stated that his job was fun and loving in the beginning, but he became bored working there. Bob stated that he has a regular doctor that he goes to every few years for his physicals, but not all the time. (Brewer & Simpelo, 2014). Bob reported that he drinks occasionally, but only with his frat brothers from his former colleagues. Bob also stated that he does not have any history of drug use or etc. Bob does not seem to like talking about his family especially his mother l, but enjoyed talking about his Friends. (Brewer & Simpelo, 2014). Bob is now feeling a sense of anxiety, but no other healthcare concerns. Bob is trying to figure out a new career plan since he is no longer interested in his current job, which is causing him a sense of anxiety. (Brewer & Simpelo, 2014).
Theoretical Orientation
Based on a behavioral perspective Bob is only saying he just feels a little anxiety at the moment. Bob acted in a way of not wanting to include his mother only because he felt she didn’t have his best interests. The way she spoke of him is not so good whether she had good or bad intentions. (Brewer & Simpelo, 2014). The theory of the mind refers to the ability of the individual to make inferences of what people may think or may be thinking and feeling. (Schlinger, 2009). While trying to predict what the person does in different situations within inferences. Bob’s behavior was acquired as a function of his childhood environment. (Schlinger, 2009).
Diagnosis
When providing a diagnosis for Bob Generalized anxiety disorder could be present. While trying to adapt to new things and find future employment that’s were Bob states that he starts to feel anxiety. The DSM-5 describes Generalized Anxiety disorder as an ordinary worry or less serious. GAD can be difficult to control and shows episodes such as physical symptoms that are placed all in one. Together it makes the individual restlessness with a cascade of misery. Bob stated that he was not happy with his current job. So he began to show signs of withdrawal from feeling confused which co concerns his family and friends. (Morrison, 2014).
Evidence base Treatment
When providing Bob with treatment the APA states in code 4.02 that it is the professionals’ responsibility to explain to patients/clients the developing nature of treatment, risk other alternatives and etc. (American Psychological Association, 2010). When treating the disorder I would advise Bob to seek therapy sessions to help him cope with feelings of anxiety. I would also recommend a psychoactive drug that would be beneficial for his type of anxiety disorder. Bob didn’t seem to have the disorder severe or chronic, but without treatment, this could result in a bad outcome for Bob eventually. (Brewer & Simpelo, 2014).
