23 years ago the phrase’ to end welfare as we know it” became a realty as welfare reform policy was enacted by president Bill Clinton. We have spend the semester reading, discussion, writing, deconstructing and analyzing all the factors that shape poverty and social welfare policy in the current U.S. For this final paper show me that you can synthesize what you have learned from the class work and the two course books.
1. Discuss whatcharacteristicsof economic and social welfare policy, andpolitical perspectiveshinderedworking families, and folks getting evicted with their efforts to reach self-sufficiency? Be specific and say how? Discuss how these policies impact managers and supervisors of the working poor. How do these same policies support andhelp landlords? Use specific examples and citations from the books.
2.Desmond writes, “Poverty was a relationship, I thought, involving poor and rich people alike” (page 317). How should we be examining the rich and their role in creating and maintaining poverty? What are some of the ways that landlords profit from their tenants? I’m looking for your critical thinking here.
3. Recommendations – Based on the course readings and your knowledge from our class you are now asked to make recommendations to President Trump for important changes to U.S. social welfare policies and frame your suggestion within a sociological perspective. Outline and explain three systemic, structural recommendations you would make to change an unfair economy, and create ethical alternatives to the U.S. social welfare system. Use citations and draw from the final chapters of Desmond and Dodson books. Also refer to Edelman article and list of solutions.
4. Finally, offer a detailed discussion of how each of the books impacted you. Be sure to make sociological connections and offer reflections about how Dodson/ Desmond helped demystify many misconceptions of the business of eviction, poverty, the economy, low wage workers lives, welfare policy, civil disobedience, and social change. Include something about the role of resistance and poverty knowledge. This should be at least a full page and should reflect some of what you learned as a sociologist and human being.
Please Note: It is important to pay attention to page restrictions for this assignment. Clearly, this is an assignment about quality, not quantity. Please label each answer.
I will evaluate your answers on the basis of: 1) how thoughtfully, accurately, sociological, and completely you answer the questions; and2)how well organized and clearly articulated your answers are. Neatness and proper grammar and punctuation are assumed expectations.
Good luck, I’m excited to hear your sociological analysis and critical thinking!
