Brain Development in Adolescents
Adolescents are often victims of the statement that they use their emotions and hormones to make decisions that could otherwise have lasting impacts on the rest of their lives. To some parents and adult significant others, hormones in teenagers are responsible for actions that extensively contradict any rationality that the adult could imagine (Smith, Chein, & Steinberg, 2013). Consequently, teenagers have often received much rebuke for their actions, with most cases including the assertion from the source of the rebuke that the individuals ought to have thought harder of the consequences of their actions prior to making certain decisions. However, scientific research into brain development and its role in influencing the actions by the teenage population suggests that some of their responses and actions under different circumstances are a result of their brain development process, in addition to the hormonal impact in their perceived irrationality.
