For this assignment, you will write a paper analyzing the stages of a relationship you have had or one from television or movies. You’ll focus on both the stages of “coming together” and “coming apart.”
Instructions:
- Review the stages of relationships and the types of messages associated with each stage in the textbook and in the learning activities. 2. Review interpersonal relationship types and the theories of interpersonal communication in the textbook and in the learning activities. 3. Think of a relationship (or more than one) from your past that demonstrates the stages of a relationship. You could choose something from you own experience, or select a series or movie. For example, if you chose the series “Friends;’ could you identify the “coming together” stages demonstrated by the main characters? What were the clues? Could you identify the “coming apart” stages? Again, how did you know what stage they were at? 4. Once you’ve decided which path to take (personal or from a series or film), you will need to identify 10 examples (one for each stage, five for coming together, and five for coming apart) to demonstrate for the audience. Consider what visual images or pictures might demonstrate each stage. 5. Assignment Format Option A: Create a slide show with 12 slides (1. introduction, 2-11 for the stages, one each, and finally slide 12 for references). Assignment Format Option B: Write a three- to four-page paper, not counting the title page and the references page, analyzing that relationship from the contact stage to conclusion. 6. Your presentation or paper should include a discussion of the stages of interpersonal relationships and the types of messages associated with each stage.
Suggested structure: Introduction paragraph that includes a main idea, multiple body paragraphs with evidence and support, and conclusion paragraph that wraps it up.
If for some reason you do not want to write about a relationship you have had, you can analyze a relationship from a television series or movie. Include links to clips or refer to specific episodes or time markers in the show(s) or film(s). Alternately, you can also write about the relationship of a close friend or family member.
