States of Consciousness

States of Consciousness

People seek to alter their consciousness at times when they experience discomfort. This may be physical (e.g. pain) or psychological (e.g. social anxiety). In this discussion, you will compare how those of primitive and modern day cultures use hallucinogens to alter consciousness.

Conduct research using the assigned reading and Library to learn about a specific culture (e.g. Native American, rave) and its members use of hallucinogens.
Which drugs are used by the selected culture? Explain the route of administration and how it effects the brain (e.g. drug interaction).
Using non-academic sources, find information about the drug(s) that you researched. Report some of the myths about the drugs that you find. What do people who use the drugs say to try to convince others to use them too? Report your resources, even though they are not academic (e.g. website or blog).

After you have completed the reading, and without reviewing your classmates’ responses, post your initial response to the following Discussion. Your post should be at least 400-450 words in length and should extend the discussion of the group supported by your course materials and/or other appropriate resources
