As discussed in Section 3.3 of the text, children like novelty, simplification, repetition, exaggeration, and elaboration in the stories they hear (Coats, 2013). Think back to your childhood or to your children’s. What story do you remember as being particularly enjoyable or special? Which of the above mentioned attributes did that story possess? Provide specific examples. Lastly, discuss why you feel your book of choice still stands out to you today and how we, as parents and teachers, can ensure that our children have pleasing experiences with the books we choose.

In my childhood, listening to bedtime stories from either my dad or my mum seemed like a regular thing to do before I was tucked in for sleep. I listened to a lot of fairytales that only brought me happiness and made me dream. Stories like Cinderella, or Rapunzel or Sleeping Beauty always managed to catch my attention. However, the most enjoyable story I can remember fondly would be the story of Hansel and Gretel.
