Using Clinical Supervision
Getting Started
Clinical supervision is integral to continuing the professional development of social workers. Supervision can even be undertaken using technological mediums such as videoconference, email, and teleconference. This is known as “telesupervision”.
So, what makes a good supervision session and a good supervisor? According to the NASW Best Practices Standards in Social Work Supervision, good supervision has three components; Administrative, Educational, and Supportive. And the supervisor must practice good role-modeling and demonstrate competence.
But what happens in a supervision session? Case staffings are a big component of supervision. Issues such as transference and countertransference, alternative interventions, boundaries, and ethical problem-solving are only a few of the ‘hot topics’ discussed with a clinical supervisor.
In this workshop, you will apply best-practice standards to video’s demonstrating clinical supervision sessions.
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
• Assess feedback from supervision and consultation to guide professional judgment and behavior (PLO 1).
