The Audacity of Voice
Prepare: Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read all three of the following essays:

Reflect: Using the SQ3R reading method, consider how the author(s) you read are writing about communication/speaking out, and how they view and interact with the idea of communication/speaking out. Also think about how those points of view compare to your own perceptions of what you see as communicating/speaking out.
Write: Upon reflection, select ONE of the above essays on place and write at least three paragraphs (200-300 words for each paragraph) where you accomplish the following:
- Summarize what you read and explain what parts of the SQ3R process helped you.
- Make connections between what you read about communicating/speaking out and other knowledge/experience/
observations you have had about communicating/speaking out. - Articulate any questions/curiosities/
predictions/challenges you have based on the reading and use examples from the essay to explain those. - Incorporate a quote and/or paraphrase where appropriate with proper APA citation.
Your initial post must be at least 600 words in length and posted by Day 3. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.).
Respond to Peers: Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. In each response,
- State what have you learned as a result of reading about your peer’s experience, as well as how it was similar to or different from your own experience.
- Address your classmate’s questions/curiosities/
predictions/challenges that they faced.
Response posts must be at least 200 words in length. If you have questions about how to participate in discussions, consult “About Discussions” under the Course Home menu. You are not required to support your claims with additional scholarly sources; however, should you decide to use additional sources, make sure you properly cite any references. Solution Preview
After reading three of the provided essays, I chose to reflect on “The Audacity of Voice” by Roxane Gay. The article reviews a girl named Lena Dunham and her ability to take bold risks as she considers herself the voice for this generation of women. According to Gay, 2014, Dunham has had devastating experiences in the past such as “being raped by a mustachioed campus Republican.” This was a sexual encounter that no one could classify properly but sounds like the voice of her generation, one that has struggled to come to terms with the rape culture. The review emphasizes the need for women to take a stand and speak about atrocious encounters that they face in the society.
