I choose this topic

  1. Discuss gender stereotypes in our society using as sources one or more of the following: Like Tomboys and Hate Girlie Girls.pdfActions by Lisa Davis , Derek Thompson’s “The Brutal Math of Gender Inequality in Hollywood”Links to an external site.  and “The Extreme Gender Bias in Hollywood Employment is Not Improving.”Links to an external site. What do these articles suggest about the negative social effects produced by rigid gender roles?  Do both the articles reveal similar messages about our society?  Do they differ? Feel free to use other sources, and/or your own experience as supporting examples if you want. If you do use other sources, be sure to include them on the Works Cited list. Although it would be fine to just write about one article, you may want to look at the articles at “What’s Gender Got to Do With It?”Links to an external site. on www.theysayiblog.comLinks to an external site.

What is Textual Analysis?

A textual analysis essay is a common type of academic essay assigned in college classes. You will often be asked to interpret and/or evaluate the content of a piece of writing.  Whether analyzing a film, a poem, a short story, a scholarly article from a professional journal, or as in our case, non-fiction essays, the basic concept is the same: you refer to specific aspects of the source text to explain and support your perspective, your view, your evaluation or analysis of the text.

The most important point to remember when writing an analytical essay is do not summarize the original text.  Instead, stay focused on presenting your views on that text, just as you presented your views on the message in photograph you chose for Essay 2.

Note that all academic writing is argumentative/persuasive – every paper should have a main point that someone might disagree with. Your job as a writer is to persuade the reader to agree with your assessment or perspective. In Essay 3, you are trying to convince the reader to see the issue the way you see it.

Choose any one (1) of the following options:

  1. Choose any article on www.theysayiblog.comLinks to an external site. and express your perspective on the article. You will be analyzing the persuasiveness of the article.  You can either completely agree with the author, completely disagree, or have a mixed view.  However, you do have to take a stand, and explain your point-of-view.  Your opinion/evaluation/analysis of the article will be your thesis.  Use examples and explanation to make the reader understand your opinion or reaction to the article you selected.  You can also use other articles to support and explain your perspective, if you want.
  2. 3. Compare Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Actionsand Clive Thompson’s essay “Is Google Wrecking Our Memory?”ActionsDiscuss which article you think best approaches the subject. Which do you find more convincing? Explain your choice, using examples from both articles. You can bring in examples from elsewhere, or your personal examples, if you want. Note that you may see both strengths and weaknesses in both articles, and you can mention these in your essay, but you need to make a choice as to which article provides a more convincing overall presentation. If you want, you can use these two optional articles as sources to explain your view:“Google is Making Us Stupid and Smart at the Same Time?” by Adam Clark EstesActions and “Is Google Ruining Your Memory?” by Jonah Lehrer

  4. Write a rhetorical textual analysis of “All Words Matter: ‘The Manipulation Behind ‘All Lives Matter,’” Kelly Coryell, from They Say, I Say, 312—325. Discuss why her essay is persuasive, or not, and how readers of different backgrounds or mindsets might or might not be convinced by Coryell’s thesis. What type of people would find her article convincing, and why? Who might disagree, and why? How does she address the opposing view? Mention which examples you think would be most and least effective in connecting with an average American reader. Feel free to base your essay on Coryell’s use of ethos, pathos, and logos, if you want.
