CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The American Dream can be described as a set of ideals where one will have the freedom that will not only ensure their success but will also ensure that there is social mobility which will be enjoyed by the other family members. The American Dream is considered part of the American ethics. Back in the year 1931, James Truslow Adams defined the American Dream as life which would not only be better and fuller but will give one the opportunity which would blend with the person’s achievement. Additionally, the concept has been said to rely on the Declaration of Independence which stated “all men are created equal” which would result to three rights, the right to life, the right to liberty and the right for the individual to pursue their happiness (Hochschild, 1996).
