Spanish Conquest of Latin America
1. Why were the Caribbean islands important in the conquest of Latin America?
The Caribbean islands were very important to Spanish in their conquest of Latin America because they acted as stepping stone (p. 60). Columbus-led Spanish team conquered the islands and then established an operation from where they would stage other operations of the conquest of other territories. For example, Hispaniola acted as operation ground from where Cuba was conquered. Cuba then served as an operation base from where Mexico was conquered.
