Psychological Trauma
Psychological trauma is a form of injury to the mind and occurs due to the effect of a distressing or disturbing occurrence resulting from the overwhelming quantity of stress exceeding an individual’s aptitude to manage (Briere, 2004). Somatic issues often indicate the focus of the bodily symptoms in expressing emotional stress. Somatic symptoms usually occur on people with traumatic stress reactions with PTSD. Individuals from specific cultural and ethical backgrounds may present emotional distress through physical illness. Most persons with somatization are probably not aware of their connection of emotions and physical signs they are undergoing (Centre for Substance Abuse Treatment, 2014).
