MEMORIAL HOSPITAL RESPONSE AND RECOVERY TO HURRICANE KATRINA
Introduction
August 2005, a memorable day for the citizens of Louisiana and Florida after the strike of the famous Hurricane Katrina, a massive, deadly and destructive category 5 hurricane. In Florida, there were massive land falls stretching through to eastern Texas. The hurricane caused subsequent flooding due to the fatal engineering errors on levees which are designed to protect the land from oceanic flooding. As a result of this catastrophic phenomena, there was a loss of life as the hurricane was marked the largest biggest in history after hurricane Camille and Hurricane Michael both in 1935 and 1969 respectively. In such a dire time, a book Five Days at Memorial, by Sheri Fink describes the helter-skelter happenings of a storm atrophied hospital in New Orleans during the Hurricane Katrina. In 2009, the book was printed in the New York Times Magazine. The life and death events in the Memorial Medical Center lasted for five days whilst thousands of injured residents were entombed in this hospital without power, sewer flow, air conditioning, and supplies. The American triage system deprioritized the censoriously sick for evacuation.
