Which entire group of instruments from the string family is left out of the first movement completely?
In order, please watch each of these videos…
1. Please watch the first attached video, a sort of “Ted talk” about the first movement of Brahms’ Requiem.
Answer the following questions: a. Where does Brahms claim he receives inspiration for each morning’s work spent composing?
b. Which entire group of instruments from the string family is left out of the first movement completely?
2. Next, view the video of Brahms first movement and, considering the text: “Blessed are they who bear suffering, for they shall be comforted” and “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy”
along with what you learned in the “Ted talk’ video, describe how you believe Brahms makes the text fit the music.
3. Now view the third video, the second movement: “Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras”. I would make the argument that this piece is in the form ABAC. Listen to the piece and tell me the minutes and seconds at the point where you hear “C”…
(I recommend listening to this movement with a great set of speakers, if possible, to enjoy the full power of what Brahms is offering you musically. 🙂 and my apologies for the grainy video quality, but I chose this because they use the English subtitles)
4. Lastly, view the video for the fourth movement, “How Lovely is thy Dwelling Place”. This is sung in English instead of the original German, which is sometimes done. Share your thoughts on Brahms’ pairing of text and music in this movement in a
few sentences.
This assignment is not due until midnight on Tuesday, April 21.
