Visual Communication
Advertisers, designers, artists, social media managers, and brand managers’ careers are focused on creating engaging content that resonates with target audiences. That content often takes the form of advertisements, whether print, digital, video, or radio. As hard as they try, though, they don’t always hit the mark. Sometimes they produce great work, but the brand itself falters in delivering good products or services. Sometimes the company produces excellent offerings, but the advertisements and branding fail to engage customers.
In this course, you’re learning about what makes visual communication in the media engaging or not. The best advertisements speak to customers because they make them feel seen and understood. With that in mind, find one advertisement online or in print that you find extremely appealing OR extremely un-appealing.
For your initial post:
- Include the advertisement in your initial post.
- If it’s a still image online, download the image and include it in your initial post.
- If it’s a video online, copy the share link and include it in your initial post.
- If it’s in print, take a picture of it and include it in your initial post.
- Discuss what you find most appealing or unappealing about the advertisement. Explain why you feel this way. Be specific.
- Explain your emotional response to the advertisement.
- Discuss how cultural perception affects your response to the advertisement. For example, if the advertisement is about a skateboard brand, but you don’t feel it’s an accurate representation of skater culture, comment on this. Or, if you feel that an advertisement did a great job of resonating with a religious group because of the colors, images, lighting, or text, explain that clearly and specifically.
- The advertisement must not be lewd, crude, or hateful. If it is, your initial post may get deleted by your instructor, and you may earn a zero for this discussion forum.
