Chloroplasts can be found in the cells of the mesophyll in plant leaves. There are generally 30-40 for every mesophyll cell. The chloroplast has an inward and external membrane with an unfilled intermediate space in between. Inside the chloroplast are piles of thylakoids, known as grana, and also stroma, the thick liquid in the chloroplast. These thylakoids encompass the chlorophyll that is essential for the plant to undergo photosynthesis. The space that chlorophyll fills is known as the thylakoid space (Staehelin, 2005).
