The balance of power to the behavior of the major powers in 1914

Introduction

It is apparent that when a City-State tends to be more powerful than other City-States, the powerful City-State may tend to dominate the less powerful City-States which may eventually result to conflict. The sovereignty of City-States is endangered with there is imbalance in terms of powers among different City-States. The powerful City-States may take advantage of their powers and exploit the City-States with lower powers. This may result to conflict and if not controlled can escalate to war. To stop such conflict in the world, balance of power theory is applied. Basically, balance of power can merely be defined as a situation whereby all the City-States have equal powers which discourages conflict among these City-States. Apparently, the equilibrium created within these City-States harmonizes these City-States thus promoting peace and unity amongst them. Balance of power is enhanced through distribution of powers among City-States to ensure that there is no City-State that is powerful enough to cause interference in the other City-States.
