Summary of “Many Rivers to Cross Episode 4”
Question 1
In the video, historian Gidding states that African Americans had the opportunity to “get the boot off their neck” during the migration out of the south. The Jim Crow rules were the boot on the African Americans that Giddings is referring to. The Jim Crow rules involved both government sanctions and mob activities that were meant to keep black Americans in their place as second class citizens. Apart from being denied access to some of the services that were available to whites, such as quality education, African Americans were also subjected to lynching and mob justice to scare them. Additionally, whites used train crashes to execute black Americans as seen through the death of Thomas Moss.
