What impact did Mikhail Gorbachev’s ideas of glasnost (openness), perestroika (restructuring) and demokratizatsiia (democratization) have on Communist society? Were these principles compatible with collectivization and a command economy? Did Communist leaders favor these principles, or did they feel that their hands were tied once they were introduced into Communist society?

The main text for this course is Brower’s The Word in The Twentieth Century: From Empires to Nations. This week, you will read from Chapter 8, “Cold War and Revolutions in East Asia, and Chapter 13,”The West from Cold War to European Union.” The fall of communism in the Soviet Union paralleled the movement toward a European Union in the West. When the Soviet empire vanished, the map of Europe returned to nation-states that were often divided by language and culture.

The organization of the Soviet Union suffered a series of problems in the 1980s. the political and the economic system were severely destroyed, the agricultural sector in the economy being the most affected. Citizens were also affected because they lacked social freedom and bought bad quality goods from the unadvanced factories.
