What ideas articulated by Havel do we see in Amnesty International?
Amnesty International dates its founding in Great Britain to 1961, while Vaclav Havel, the Czech artist, writer, and later president, wrote “The Power of the Powerless” in 1978. Yet, I would argue that Amnesty Int’l embodies a conception of political participation, the nature of social change, and the foundations of human rights activism that Havel articulated seventeen years later in a very different context.
