Abstract
Food remains an important part of human well being. While this is so, different communities exhibit differences in the type of foods they eat. Some of these differences are in form of taboos, that is, one community may consume what another does not on the ground that the item in question is prohibited by the latter. This paper seeks to look at one such taboo relating to the American community, the eating of dogs. The paper will endeavor to explain the origin of the taboo and the various reasons as to why it is a taboo till date despite some communities in the world partaking dog meat. It will further demonstrate reasonable grounds why some beliefs in such communities fail the test of time. Basically, the call for dogs as pet friends will be emphasized and how these pets remain important to human lives. Finally, the call to protect the animal in question after determining how the taboo works not only to prohibit humans from eating, but due to the important place the animal has in society.
