Introduction

A deepfake refers to an artificial intelligence human image synthesis method or technique that is used to superimpose and combine images and videos onto source images. The learning technique is referred to as generative adversarial network also known as GAN. Through the combination of an existing image or video to a source video, a fake video is produced that shows the individual performing an action that never occurred in real life or reality. Deepfakes have been used in the recent past to show videos of people having sex or performing a given activity that they never performed in the first place. The technique has also been used by unscrupulous individuals to show politicians giving certain gestures that they never made in reality. They are often used to describe people performing a given activity that they never took place in. the aim of this paper is to assess deepfakes while at the same time investigating some of the harmful effects they cause. A comparison will also be conducted on face-swaps and deepfakes.
