Nurses can help a patient make immediate and permanent lifestyle behavioral changes by first creating a safe environment where the patient feels comfortable sharing their concerns and can identify the barriers that are affecting their ability to make the change. Once identified, the nurse and patient can systematically begin to address the barriers.
“One key factor in the ability to comply with health education is financial constraints. The individual may not have the resources to pay for medications or a proper diet or may not have transportation to appointments” (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2014, p. 220).
I have frequently contacted our outpatient social services department for a list of community resources that can assist with financial and transportation issues. Involving the patient in a plan to reach out to the available resources and arranging follow up appointments with the provider and social services helps set the stage for future planning and goal setting.
