The goal of this essay is to point out key similarities and differences between the Mesopotamian myth : “Descent of Isthar to the Underworld” (~700BCE) and the greek myth: “The Odyssey, Book 11”. The Descent of Ishtar to the Underworld or the Netherworld is one of the oldest poems to have been written since most individuals will believe that the poem was composed in the periods before 1900B.C. Studies carried out by some individuals have claimed that the poem could have been composed at an earlier date. The poem consists of 415 lines and the lines which revolve around the Ishtar descent is about 145 lines (Stephanie, 382). The Odyssey is an epic poem which was composed by Homer.
