Loving v. Virginia civil case
The loving v. Virginia case is a landmark civil case in the History of the United States of America. It was a case in which the Loving family petitioned the supreme court of America after having been found guilty by a Virginian court for racial intermarriage which was a crime in the state. Richard Loving, a white man, had married his black wife Mildred Loving while at DC but relocated back to their home situated in the Virginian state where they were arrested, prosecuted and found guilty. With the help of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Loving’s appealed to the supreme court that ruled in their favor in 1967 (Roberts 176). This was a case that invalidated state laws that banned interracial marriages among residents in the United States of America. Also, with the help of the case, the “anti-miscegenation” statutes were declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court as per the 14th amendment of the constitution.
