Instructions
Close reading is the practice of careful close analysis of a text’s details and patterns in order to develop a deep understanding of the meaning (and sometimes also the aesthetics or craft) of the text. The skill of reading a text closely and carefully are particularly important when confronting a difficult text, or one that you are having trouble understanding.
For this week’s writing assignment, you will conduct a one-page close reading of the excerpt from Anderson’s Imagined Communities. Follow the instructions below.
1. Go through the passage and write down any words you don’t know. Define them.
2. Outline the main points of Anderson’s argument.
3. Summarize in your own words what you think Anderson’s main point is: what is an imagined community?
4. Does Anderson’s argument resonate with you? Why or why not? Give an example to support your claim.
Your close reading should be 1-3 pages, double-spaced.
