First Trial
The case of South Dakota State versus Donald Opperman was first presented to the Supreme Court of South Dakota by the state against Mr. Opperman. While conducting a routine highway patrol, the police found Opperman’s car left unattended at in an unauthorized area of the street. The car was impounded, and its owner asked to go back home until he could pay the fine and retrieve it. This offense led the police into more inspection, until they conducted an inventory search on Opperman’s car (James & Thomas, 2001).
