Reflections on Effectiveness

In this reflection assignment, you will look back at your discussion prompt in Module 1 regarding your philosophy of observation and assessment, the strategies you currently use to understand children, the types of feedback you offer, and others.

You will identify five areas you have discovered in need of improvement related to observation and assessment of children (understanding bias, taking better notes, applying observations to developmental checklists, for example). How will you improve these areas? You will give specific strategies for teaching yourself to be a better observer.

Course Objectives  Explain the purposes of observation and assessment for young children  Identify guidelines for developmentally appropriate observation and assessment for young children.  Determine the appropriateness of observation and assessment tools for a specific purpose and developmental level.  Demonstrate knowledge of standardized, play-based, and observation assessment options and the appropriate use with young children.  Describe the process for gathering, interpreting, and disseminating assessment data for very young children.  Discuss characteristics of family-professional partnerships that promote children’s development and learning.  Describe effective strategies to conduct observation and documentation.  Reflect on ways to continue to grow as an observer.

Directions: 1) Save and print the Module 5 Reflection. 2) Create a 3-page paper in a Word or text document for your response. Use 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font. 3) Use APA (6th edition) format for the title page, references page, and in-text citations. 4) Develop an introduction and conclusion for your paper. 5) Reflect on the following:  Identify five areas which you have discovered in need of improvement related to the observation and assessment of young children.  Explain each area and why you consider it to be a need of improvement.  Describe at least two specific strategies for improvement in each area. 6) Follow the directions to submit your final Word or text document.
