Details: Advocating for Families of Children with Disabilities
Scully, Barbour, & Roberts-King (2014) believe that “ensuring optimal growth and development of children with disabilities is a responsibility shared by their families, schools, and community agencies” (p. 147). As an early childhood administrator, you must consider the role you play in building and maintaining relationships with parents of children with disabilities. You are also uniquely positioned to be a strong advocate for children and families in the context of the school and community.
As an advocate for families of children with disabilities, you will discuss the importance of early identification and early intervention and plan two program activities that increase awareness of the impact that a child with disabilities can have on a family and encourage family, school, and community collaboration. You will begin with a discussion of the importance of early identification and early intervention and the role of parents in this process. Next, you will discuss strategies to engage parents. Finally, you will discuss one program that will be hosted at your early childhood organization and one program that will occur in the community. You will then invite families and community members to participate in order to promote collaboration. For this Assignment, you will create a Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with 12 slides to share your planned activities with families, staff, and community members.
You should use the provided template and your PowerPoint presentation should include the following slides:
Slide 1: Title slide with title of presentation, your name, course information, and date.
Slide 2: Welcome and introduction slide.
Slide 3: Discuss the benefits of early identification and intervention.
Slide 4: Discuss role of parents in early identification and intervention.
Slides 5, 6, 7: Engaging parents.
Service by parents is a key step in their involvement in the child’s educational experience. Yet, this service requires a trusting and supportive environment that welcomes the parent as an active participant. Using the article below, please explain four strategies to support a welcoming environment, ways to move families from inactive to active participation in their child’s educational experience, and how to retain the engagement of parents.
