Introduction

As part of the Bill of Rights which protects the most vital rights and liberties of the citizens of America, the first Amendment works to ensure the enforcement of these rights and freedom. It prohibits any law-be it federal or state law from infringing the citizen’s freedom of press, freedom of speech, and the right to peaceful assembles. The freedoms of speech, assembly, and press first started when European settlers first came to the United States and created their British colonies. During that time, it was difficult for one to criticize the government or speak out freely and publicly regarding their political opinions.
