Review Jamie’s Story in this PDF file (page 82).
Once you have read Jamie’s story, please answer the following questions:
1. Based on where you want to practice social work (in Salisbury, MD, in another location in Maryland where your family is from, in another state, military social work, etc.) determine if/what community resources are available to this youth. In that area:
a. Identity the geographical area where you are practicing social work
b. Identity the name of a shelter and provide information that your client would need to access this shelter
c. Identity counseling facilitates that work with LGBTQ youth (if possible, free or low cost)
d. Describe what other needs they may have and what resources are available to help them meet this needs
2. Reflect on the resources available in this area. If you found none or limited resources, review how you might help this youth (immediate need to meet basic needs and future advocacy).
In your answer, make sure to answer the following questions:
a. What types of intake questions and service planning might you as a shelter case manager incorporate to better serve these youths?
b. What organizational and community factors (i.e. resources, policies, institutional discrimination, etc.) were present in these cases, or might be present in such cases, that the shelter should address to better serve these youth?
c. How does intersectionality effect Jamie’s experience of oppression in this shelter?
